Interstate Clinic

Lisl Close tells of her and Win’s 1938 successful interview for the Interstate Clinic project. Their sole competitor that day was Tom Ellerbe, then a single practitioner whose firm went on to be today’s giant Ellerbe-Becket. The clinic is a simple design with beautiful proportions, embodying many of the couples core architectural principles. The Closes were able to get young, local artist, Charles Biederman (now world-renowned) to create wonderful, large pieces for the waiting room. One of the chief clinic doctors was Raymond F. Hedin whose son, Robert, with wife Carolyn later tapped Close Associates again to design their Red Wing home.
