The new Harriet Tubman Center reflects recent changes in programs combating family violence. Not only is its location published for the first time, but the Center now incorporates day care, transitional housing and educational programs for women and their families in addition to a traditional shelter for women escaping violence.

Close Associates' central design concept placed public and staff areas on the ground floor with housing on the second to create a buffer between families and their abusers. The building wraps around the children's play area, enclosing it on three sides with the Center's residential wings. Art glass ini every living unit and in the common areas reminds families that despite their troubles, they deserve special amenities.

We collaborated with the Center's neighbors to arrange shared parking, common lighting, fencing, and a safe, vest-pocket park. NSP's Energy Assets Program allowed our engineers to save 25% of projected energy costs and secure large rebates.

Our contractor, BorSon Construction, was selected early to price and offer advice. This partnership saved time and money.
