Close Associates has long been a strong advocate of "Patient-Oriented Design," a philosophy that has become the latest trend in health care. Our continuing work at Children's Hospital demonstrates our success with this approach. The plan structure featured on this card, located in the shared lobby of the United/Children's Emergency Wing, is an example of how one small element of the hospital can embody these principles. Emergency is a highly stressful area. Patient siblings, who may not understand what is happening, need a diversion. This playhouse, along with an adjacent play area, television, and video games, provides a space for children to release pent up energy by climbing and play-acting with other children. The design combines the more formal finishes and colors of the lobby into a playful and inviting little house.
