SELBY COMMONS

date: ?

city: St. Paul, MN

architect: Gar Hargens, AIA, Jens Henry Vange, AIA

The 909 Building at Selby Commons in St. Paul was recently remodeled to house single parent families on its upper floor and provide commercial rental space at street level. Because of its almost square shape, this sturdy old manufacturing building was difficult to subdivide. In addition, irregular fenestration made the Owners' (Selby Commons Limited Partnership) request for identical units difficult. These problems were overcome, and a new opportunity gained, by pulling the exteriors of the apartments inward from the existing walls. Interior space otherwise unusable, became individual exterior terraces providing supervised outdoor play space and "eyes on the Avenue".
