The Harriet Tubman Center reflects changes in programs designed to combat family violence. In addition to providing a traditional shelter for women escaping violence, the Center incorporates day care, transitional housing, and educational programs for women and their families. Close Associates' central design concept placed public and staff areas on the ground floor with housing on the second to create a buffer between families and their abusers. The building wraps around the children's play area, enclosing it with the Center's residential wings on three sides. Art glass in every living unit and common areas reminds families that despite their troubles, they deserve special amenities. Close Associates collaborated with the Center's neighbors to arrange shared parking, common lighting, fencing and a safe, vest-pocket park. NSP's Energy Assets Program allowed the owner to save an additional 25% of projected energy costs and secure large rebates.
